More on THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA (1960):
The Vampire and the Ballerina (1960), directed by Renato Polselli, is a gothic horror film set in a remote village where a troupe of ballet dancers are preparing for a performance. The plot begins when the ballerinas arrive at their manager’s uncle’s home to rehearse, but instead they are soon caught up in a sinister situation. Unbeknownst to them, the foreboding castle nearby is home to a vampire with a taste for young women. The dancers become the focus of his deadly interest, and they must find a way to escape his evil clutches before they fall victim to his vampiric thirst.
As the film unfolds, the vampire’s bite leaves a trail of death and transformation, with victims turning into vampiric creatures themselves—unfortunately for his progeny, this undead master has no desire for children!
Considered the trigger film that led to the later tying of horror and sex in Italian cinema, The Vampire and the Ballerina blends the genre of vampire horror with elements of mystery and eroticism, making it a unique entry in 1960s Italian cinema. While the film is not as well-known as other classic Italian horror movies, it showcases the stylistic and atmospheric qualities that defined the Italian Gothic genre. With a plot revolving around a mix of sensuality, danger, and the supernatural, the film offers an eerie and captivating experience, reflective of the era’s penchant for stylish horror with a darkly sensual undertone.
