EP 231: A ROMANTIC REVISITING OF "EASY A" (2010)!
To celebrate the lovey-dovey season, we're setting our phasers on love and laughter with this revisiting of our chat about EASY A (2010)!
EMILY STONE (she prefers we call her that rather than EMMA, and she asked nice!) stars in this teen comedy with wit and stars-a-plenty. When a little white lie has the whole school thinking quiet girl-next-door Olive is a prostitute, Olive takes a stand against the double standard. However, when the pressure of the Scarlet Letter effect (see, we read!) becomes too much to take, Olive needs her friends, family, and maybe even high-school evangelical Marianne (AMANDA BYNES in her last film role) to help her! Also, it's got THOMAS HADEN CHURCH, LISA KUDROW, PENN BADGLEY, DAN BYRD, MALCOM McDOWELL, and freaking more!
So put on your corset and listen to us talk teens, sex, and comedy in this "Romantic Revisiting!" episode of CULT AND CLASSIC FILMS Podcast!

More on EASY A (2010), courtesy of SkyNet:
Easy A (2010) is a teen comedy film that follows Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone), a high school student whose life takes an unexpected turn after she lies about losing her virginity. When her best friend pressures her for details about her weekend, Olive fabricates a story about a fictional hookup to avoid embarrassment. However, the rumor spreads quickly, and she gains a scandalous reputation overnight. Inspired by The Scarlet Letter, which her class is studying, Olive embraces her newfound notoriety by sewing a red “A” onto her outfits, leaning into her bad-girl persona.
As the gossip escalates, Olive begins accepting gift cards and small favors from socially awkward boys in exchange for pretending they’ve had romantic encounters with her, boosting their reputations while damaging her own. However, things spiral out of control when the lies become overwhelming, and people start treating her unfairly. Meanwhile, she develops feelings for Todd (Penn Badgley), a kind and understanding classmate who sees through the rumors and genuinely likes her for who she is. Her attempts to set the record straight backfire, leading to a crisis that forces her to confront the consequences of her deception.
In the end, Olive takes charge of her own narrative by broadcasting a live webcast where she tells the truth about the rumors and takes responsibility for her actions. She acknowledges the power of reputation and the dangers of misinformation while reaffirming her self-worth. The film concludes on a hopeful note, with Olive and Todd sharing a romantic moment, and Olive vowing to live her life on her own terms. Easy A is a witty and insightful coming-of-age story that explores themes of identity, reputation, and the social pressures of high school.
